Uncommon Threads- Friday, September 7th at Studio Hart

Hey Buffalo people!

Myself and a large group of other fantastic artists that work with thread have got a show opening this Friday at Studio Hart! You should all go check it out! Facebook event HERE! This great groups of artists was brought together by local collector Gerry Mead, and has been in the works for over a year.

Here is the write up….

Please join Studio Hart for an opening reception for the exhibit UNCOMMON THREADS, Curated by Gerald Mead. The exhibit will continue through the month of September.

Artists working in all media frequently experiment with materials outside of their comfort zone. This exhibition illustrates that concept by focusing on one element – thread or string. It includes work by artists working in a variety of media such as painting, ceramic, metal, bookworks, printmaking and collage who incorporate thread in their artwork in innovative ways. Using a fibrous material as a component of artwork often adds an element of detail that draws the viewer in for closer inspection, thus establishing a visually intimate relationship between the art object and its spectator. It can also used as a means to spatially connect elements within the composition of an artwork, and underscore the dynamism of that composition.

The works in the exhibition have been selected by independent curator Gerald Mead, an artist well know for his small-scale collages and found object assemblages. A former longtime curator at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, he has also guest-curated exhibitions for the UB Anderson Gallery, CEPA Gallery, Kenan Center Gallery and the Charles E. Burchfield Nature & Art Center.
Artists Included in the Exhibition:
Jozef Bajus, Hillary Fayle, Darien Johnson, Brian Kavanaugh, Marissa Lehner, Amanda Maciuba,
Scott McCarney, Sara Baker Michalak, Dorothy Rapp, Elizabeth Switzer and Sara M. Zak
This event takes place on the first Friday in Allentown so there is sure to be a whole host of other cool stuff to check out! Who knows, they may even close down the street again! Please go and report back as I am, obviously, over 700 miles away and cannot attend in person….Someone take photos so I can put them in my scrapbook please!
For those of you that are curious there will be selections from my Goodbye Neighbor series on display and for sale.

Work in Progress…

I’ve been working on a small print for the Painting for Preservation later in the fall while waiting for the first semester to get into gear…. Sometimes I get some flak for using collographs so much…. However, it’s nice to have something dependable to fall back on during the times your not quite sure what your doing (like every other week).

Here is the WOP collograph.

And heres a candid of the P4P crew working at St. Mary’s on the Hill as it was in the process of getting demo-ed last August.

I’ll update again with the finished product. Hopefully with enough time left to ship it off to Buffalo for the show!

I’ll post details about the show when i hear of them as well. (I hear a rumor that its going to be in the cobblestone district!)

Anyways, there was no reliable internet out there in the sticks of Western New York so that was your flash update of July. let me tell you I loved getting woken up at three in the morning by harassed cows getting brought in to be milked!

Now that I am officially in Iowa City, with high speed internet I will be back-dating some posts and updating in general, more frequently. (I hope!)

SOme of these posts and photos will be repeats for followers on instagram (more on that later) and facebook. I am still trying to work out how to balance all this new tech!

All done for now.
